Clamp that lil head in there

How much lateral head support does a toddler need in a car seat?

We got a hand-me-down 2015 Clek Fllo car seat. Our baby is a large one-year-old: 26 lbs / 33 inches (12 kg / 84 cm). So the baby fits the seat according to the specs, but there's a lot of space around his head - it looks like the random internet baby in this photo.

Is this ok? When he was a newborn, we supported his head in his bucket seat with rolled towels, as per the hospital's advice- but now he'd pull that apart. Clek doesn't seem to make anything for babies his size, and I'm a bit wary of adding another brand's headrest thingie in there.

Should we avoid using this seat - and if so, is there another brand anyone recommends? Thanks!

Just as a reminder, check the expiration date. Many car seats expire in about 5 years, so you might not have a lot of time on this seat.

Our son is almost 2 and just about your child's size now and at this point we don't do anything extra with the car seat. When he was younger (maybe around a year old), we had a head support item (similar to this) that the shoulder straps held in place. Probably pretty similar to what you were doing with towels except it's not going to move and won't come apart.

Can your baby sit unassisted? With newborns, they worry about head movement blocking the baby’s airway. By six months, most kids are able to support their heads without help.

I like Car Seats For The Littles for car seat info. Their review of the Fllo has some pictures that might reassure you - even the bigger kids have room between their heads and the sides of the seat.

Once you get past the infant stage, they don’t seem to worry about slumping heads. They do have some serious concerns about aftermarket inserts for car seats.

It looks like Clek does make an insert for infants, but your baby is already too big it.

How much time does the kid spend in the car? Per session, per day, per week?

Does that seat meet the current standards for child seats? It may not have reached expiry, but that doesn't mean that it is compliant with whatever the standards require today.

Those photos look like my oldest grandchild in his seat, so I'm thinking it is probably OK otherwise.
