Planning a Ferocious Fully-Recovered Dance Party in 2019 - Need Recs!

I've had three major leg/knee injuries in 2018 and I vowed after my first-ever visit to an ER this morning, that I am going to plan the Mother of All Dance Club Parties to celebrate being able to walk again. Problem is: I know nada about NYC Dance spots. I listen to swing music, downbeat electronica, jasz, and definitely anything that makes your ass move (when mine can, anyways.) Where would you send someone who wants to make a killer dance video in NYC to celebrate, and have the greatest night out dancing possible?

I’ve had some of the best nights out dancing at the Bell House, if you don’t mind venturing to Brooklyn. The crowd tends to be a bit older than usual clubs and friendly.

Elsewhere or the Good Room. I mostly head out for specific dj’s or bands, rather than genres, so I’d recommend using Resident Advisor. The mailing lists for GBH Events and MeanRed have also been helpful.

Best answer: Freedom Party and The Rub are two you might want to keep an eye on. I believe the Rub is at the Bell House regularly, and Freedom Party moves around a bit (I know they've been at Irving Plaza, Brooklyn Bowl, and Le Poisson Rouge). The Rub plays more hip-hop and the crowd tends to be younger than Freedom Party. Jonathan Toubin supposedly has one of the biggest Motown/R&B collections around (and it's lots of stuff that the average person would not know - but if you love the music, it's great to hear new to you stuff that's got a familiar groove). He has a residency at Home Sweet Home (which tends to be hot, sweaty, and funky (literally - on a summer night when the AC is overtaxed the scent of eau de sweat and cheap beer is ever present)), but he gets around to other venues as well.

I don't know your age, but a lot of the Brooklyn parties tend to skew younger - I'm pushing 50 and I'd have to say at some of them a huge majority of the folks on the dance floor could be my kids. (The crowds have always been welcoming and accepting - plus I really am there to dance and enjoy the music so I'm hoping the creepy old person vibes are minimized for the kiddies). Also, if you find a party on Resident Advisor, also check if it's on EventBrite - sometimes an event is listed on both, and one site will have lower ticketing fees than the other.

Happy 2019!

The danciest parties in NY that I've been to:

Soul Summit (either at Ft. Greene or Nowadays)
718 Sessions (used to be at Output, now moves around)
Soul in the Horn (Chelsea Music Hall)
The dance parties I throw :)

I hope you're back on your feet already. If you're still looking for a spot, hit me up and I might be able to help!
