Cat Name!
November 27, 2018 9:53 AM   Subscribe

I am really stuck. I rescued this cat off the street, and she is kind of a hyperactive terror, but my older cat is totally Here. For. It. They're playing non-stop and having the time of their lives. But she's been living with us for a month and I am no closer to naming this tiny cat!

I just have no idea what to call her. Personality-wise, she gets into everything and climbs everything, is really kinda scrawny but apparently strong, is generous in keeping her claws retracted while playing, she likes digging through the trash, and weaving her way around fragile objects in high places. And she seriously loves playing and going for the jugular of my other cat in a fun, dramatic way. That's all I've got. Any ideas?

my beloved BELOVED rescue cat was called Chaos. It really suited her, and it went well with her last name (Callahan) which made calling her by her full name, or full name plus title (Lady Chaos Callahan) very satisfying.

Because she's curious, Curio. And then you can call her Marie Curio. Or Madame Currypants.

Response by poster: I didn't name the other cat, its previous owner did, and I still feel low-key weird about it! So I kind of want to avoid taking the other cat's name into account (but it's from an anime film.)

Lot of great ideas above. But if you can't find a 'real' name that appeals to you, you can always make one up out of the words that best describe the cat. E.g., Tiny Terror -> Tinterror -> Tinterrorino -> Tintory, and so on.

That lovely creature right there is an Eris -- seems like trouble, but the very best kind of trouble. From Hesiod:

So, after all, there was not one kind of Strife alone, but all over the earth there are two. As for the one, a man would praise her when he came to understand her; but the other is blameworthy: and they are wholly different in nature. For one fosters evil war and battle, being cruel: her no man loves; but perforce, through the will of the deathless gods, men pay harsh Strife her honour due.

But the other is the elder daughter of dark Night (Nyx), and the son of Cronus who sits above and dwells in the aether, set her in the roots of the earth: and she is far kinder to men. She stirs up even the shiftless to toil; for a man grows eager to work when he considers his neighbour, a rich man who hastens to plough and plant and put his house in good order; and neighbour vies with his neighbour as he hurries after wealth. This Strife is wholesome for men.

Millefiori, perhaps, Millie for short. Along the same lines I second Mosaic (Mo for short) or Chiaroscuro.

Our household has a fanciful story about how cats get their markings - they get dipped in Cat Paint at the cat factory, and you can tell how they were held for the application by what parts are which color. It looks like your new acquisition was done at the end of a shift after they'd already poured together everything remaining in the various tanks.

Just to repeat my usual advice about calico cats: they're extra feisty because they're really two cats in one body.

The more I look at her, the more I think of a mischievous redhead in a black dress and one long black glove. Which, of course, makes me think of Rita Hayworth singing "Put the Blame on Mame" in Gilda.

So, Rita, Mamie, Gilda.
