Big/Tall Men's Clothes... No. Bigger Than That!
July 5, 2018 2:22 PM   Subscribe

I weigh 450 lbs (down from 470 already). My weight is carried very much in my front gut area. I wear 7X t-shirts, but they also have to be Tall to cover my belly. I have hunted extensively to find online suppliers of clothes this big. You'd think any intermediate Google-fu would turn that up. But the results in such searches SAY they'll carry my size, but they don't. Many have one plain t-shirt for $40, if anything.

I am about to embark on a great career shift (music!), and I need decent casual clothes to pull this off. My usual sweatpants and t-shirts won't cut it.

Help?

(BTW, yes I am focusing on losing weight. But I have to start where I am, size-wise. So please, no weight advice. I need clothes!)

Best answer: http://www.destinationxl.com/mens-big-and-tall-store/ has worked for me in the past (note: I was only 400 at my heaviest, so I can't 100% say they've got you covered... but it's as good of a place to start as any).

Best of luck!

Find a good tailor, too. Like, even if you're just wearing jeans and they come with an elasticated waist, that's fine; your t-shirt will hang over the waistband and that's good. BUT you don't want them to be too long in the legs or saggy in the crotch just to get the waist to fit. The tailor can make them fit better and that will make a really big difference to how put together you look, even for casual.

Fat is fine; fat and sloppy just gets you dinged professionally and socially so it's worth avoiding if you can.

Seconding the tailor recommendation. Being able to sew has saved my ass during my recent weight gain.

A friend of mine, who is similarly sized, buys from eBay.

Response by poster: The DestinationXL suggestion seems so obvious, and I know I have checked it before. I see better filtering options there than I have spotted in the past. It's strong contender. Their physical locations top out just below my needs on the XLT end, but as I lose weight they will be viable.

Have wondered about tailoring. The suggestion about altering jeans is a good example of the practical use I am looking for.

Thanks so much, everyone. Will look out for any further suggestions, but this is already a huge help.

Best answer: King Size Direct is less expensive than Destination XL (and has less of a high end), but in my experience has a larger run of big sizes.

Also, they run frequent deals/sales if you can afford to wait for them.

There’s a post on Metafilter right now about a company with a new way to make custom clothes. Maybe they could help with basics.

Port Authority Polos can be found up to 10X from a variety of retailers.
Working Person's Store
Amazon
Sears
As for pants I've found prices and service better at Big and Tall Guys.

Plus one for King Size Direct. They've done about 90% of my wardrobe.
