Emptying a storage space in NYC

I am trying to help a friend sort through and clear a storage space in Manhattan, before the remaining items are moved out of state. A large proportion of the items will need to be thrown out. How do we realistically dispose of large pieces of furniture and lots of other trash, when this unit is in the middle of NYC?
I'm thinking mostly of a large dusty sectional couch and mattresses and other things that cannot be donated. I can't exactly toss this stuff onto the curb in the middle of Manhattan. There will be a lot of other trash generated too.
I just can't imagine people are renting dumpsters to be delivered to a storage space building to handle this kind of thing, but I also can't think of another solution. This has to be a somewhat common situation. Any advice or thoughts on how best to handle it? This task is pretty much my worst nightmare, but trying to help tackle it. Thank you in advance.

Ask if the storage place has a company they use regularly, but compare those rates to at least one other company that you find yourself.

Best answer: I recently moved within NYC and had to get rid of a few large items that also couldn't be sold or donated. You can schedule a bulk pickup with the department of sanitation - you pick a day & time, enter the pickup address, and leave everything on the curb (alley is also an option, you just have to specify the location) after 4PM the day before.
