Help Me Have a Fun Day at Rockaway (Beach), NYC

We will be taking the new ferry to Rockaway tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon. The ferry lands at Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive. We want to have a good time. It won't be boiling tomorrow (thank god) but we won't want to sit at the beach that much. Questions:

Is the beach we would want to go to (for a little swimming, not surfing) right there at Beach108th or is there another part of the beach we should walk to?

Are there umbrella rentals at the beach?

Is there a shady place on the boardwalk? (I saw a picture of what they called a shady place but it was stripes of metal or something so it's only half-shady. I HATE that type of construction!).

Where should we eat?

Anything else we should know or areas we should explore?

Anywhere from about Beach 86th - 116th is all good for swimming. It's surfer heaven up to about the lower Beach 80s.

Yep! And bikes too. Highly recommend either bringing or renting a bike. There is SO MUCH fun stuff to do down there, and it's a lot easier to bike around.

Is there a shady place on the boardwalk? (I saw a picture of what they called a shady place but it was stripes of metal or something so it's only half-shady. I HATE that type of construction!).
Unfortunately, those are the only kinds of shady places on the boardwalk. They're not so bad, though, if you can snag a table directly under one of the umbrella/sails.

Where should we eat?
There is a "food court" right in the middle of the boardwalk that has everything from lobster rolls to hot dogs, BBQ and juices. You can take your pick there, or walk down to Beach 86th for Rippers (warning, it's LOUD. The music is LOUD.), or up to Beach 96th-ish for Caracas, which has arepas and the like.

If you want to venture off the boardwalk a tad, go to Rockaway Surf Club for tacos on 86th, Chicks to Go on 96th for Peruvian rotisserie, The Wharf on Beach Channel Dr. for burgers and water views, Whit's End on 97th for crazy-good brick oven pizza, or Uma's for a bizarro cross-over of Eastern European, Southeast Asian, Korean, and Middle Eastern.

And if you want to know what else is fun...

+ The Nothing Mud & Seltzer House is a blast. I'm not sure if it's still there, but you should try to go.

+ Go get a sticky, sweet, and not terribly strong PiƱa Colada at Connelly's, and try to snag a spot on the patio. There's some sweet shade there, if the "sail umbrellas" on the boardwalk aren't cutting it.

+ Please, please get a bike. The boardwalk goes for miles, and when you get down into Edgemere it gets absolutely fascinating. A lot of post-Sandy landscapes, blown-out industrial buildings, and empty (non-swimmable) beaches. You can fly past it on your bike, from the safety of the boardwalk.

Response by poster: (I had a hip replacement and have not been on a bike since -- not up to biking the boardwalk at this point -- but thank you for recommendation)
