Please recommend a low-profile radio/CD player with style

Looking for a combination radio/CD player that is no more than 6 inches high, and has a bit of design appeal—like a Bose Wave, but not a Bose Wave.

My mom has heard Bose Wave radios in others' homes, and expressed interest. The availability of the Bose Wave line (in Canada) is not clear to me, and moreover they're very expensive. (She coincidentally read that Bose spied on its headphone users' habits, and yes Bose marketers it's another knock against you.)

Can anyone recommend another combination radio/CD player that is no more than 6 inches high (it's going to sit on a certain shelf), and has a bit of design sense? She's looking for an anti-boombox. A relevant AskMe is six years old; I figure options have probably changed since then. Thx!!

You could check out Tivoli audio.

Nicely designed stuff, and readily available in Canada.

Bose stuff imho is overpriced.

The problem you'll run into is that many units with CD players are discontinued.

If she's open to it, my only recommendation would be to search eBay for Cambridge products. Here are search results for "Cambridge Soundworks Radio CD."

I mention Cambridge only because they seem to have made a fair number of models, and they have a good reputation for quality sound, but it looks like theirs are discontinued as well. You might also search for "Tabletop CD Radio" which should filter out boombox units.

Best answer: I've seen the Yamaha TSX-B235 recommended as an alternative to the Bose system.

The Tivoli radio is great, and IMO a good value. They appear to make a system with CD player as well, but it is a lot more expensive.

Tivoli and Cambridge Soundworks were both Henry Kloss companies, as were Acoustic Research, KLH, and Advent; all their products shared a similar design aesthetic (what we'd now call mid-century) and sound profile.

I have a couple of Tivoli radios and like them a lot. They're pricier than the cheap stuff, but they're good.
