Rescuing an abandoned pet bird

My immediate family member has abandoned a beloved pet green-cheek conure at a relative's house.

The relative is in no position to care for this bird beyond this weekend. Right now, I am more than a thousand miles away from the relative and the bird (they're in the Sacramento area). I have no money or transportation for myself or the relative. What can I do for this bird?

Anonymous because there is a domestic violence situation involved.

Post that shit on craigstlist - I'm sure there's someone willing to help. It's crazy, and it's just an animal - I say this as someone who has paid 100 plus dollars to rescue someone's pet rat... but just do it, you'll be glad that you did.

What is the hoped for outcome? Does the family member hope to reclaim in a few weeks when they have a more stable living arrangement or do they need to find a new long term home for the bird? Are you hoping to be the long-term home if you can figure out how to be reunited with the bird?

In the first case, i noticed a parrot rescue group in Sacramento on Facebook - I would try them and see if someone might take on a bird for a short while. People can also post to any trusted communities - I think there are a lot of bird people who would be willing to help out in case like this. (For me, I had smaller birds and would seriously consider taking in a local conure with a similar story for a few months but no way can I make a long term commitment to another bird)

If you want to get the bird out to you, you can ship pets via airlines in special pressurized, climate controlled storage areas that have the same environment as the passenger compartment. For example, here is the PetSafe service from United. Looks the cost for a small bird would be only $200. I used similar services for both a pet rat (yep, been there, done that too benadryl) and a puppy - both survived with no observable side effects.

Try contacting Sacramento Parrot Rescue on Facebook.

Yes, parrot rescue NOT NOT NOT Craigslist. "Just an animal" doesn't mean there is no obligation to care for a domesticated living creature that has no say in the matter, and bad things happen to animals on Craigslist.

I have a friend in SF who is into exotic bird rescue. Memail me and I can put you in touch. My guess is that he knows someone in Sacramento.
