Best tailors in New York?

After posting in another clothing thread, I realized that I don't really know any great tailors for alterations. I haven't bought a ton of clothes needing tailoring in New York, but I might get myself some new trousers, and the last couple of times I was unsatisfied with the job--either too long or too short (usually too long). Bonus points if they're in or convenient to the West Village. I'm not really looking for information on custom tailors, but feel free to post it--maybe I'll use it whenever I'm making my dream salary.

The John Varvatos and Prada stores both sent me to Ramón on Mott St. north of Houston for alterations, and he did an excellent job for a reasonable price.

I'll throw in a counterpoint: Ramon did a particularly mediocre job on my suits last season. My cuffs on one suit had exposed stitching on the outside that required a return trip, and I recall not being satisfied with my sleeve lengths. Also, while his prices are in line with other high-end Manhattan tailors, he's no deal. Ramon is quite nice and down-to-earth despite his "tailor to the celebs" reputation, though. You could do worse.

I took a recent alteration to a neighborhood tailor which did a decent job for two-thirds Ramon's price. Ask some well-dressed neighbors for pointers.

Response by poster: Hey folks, thought I would update this with my best West Village find thus far. It's Hong Kong Tailor Jack, on Waverly near Gay. The guy on West 4th is good, but overpriced.

I just went to a place by Grand Central Station. I can't recall their name but their phone number is 212-551-7830. They charged me $25 per seam (which added up quick), but they got my $1200 Canali Suit and $400 Prada Pants to fit perfectly.

Actually, I just called the place and got their name. Their name is Bermini Custom Tailors. Their website is www.bermini.com. Hope it helps... -James
