Moving truck parking in Brooklyn?

We're moving to Brooklyn next week, and I can't figure out where to put a moving truck.

When we moved in SF, we got a parking permit from the local police station. That was a hassle, but at least it blocked off some spaces. NYC does not seem to have the same option.

We're moving to a one way street with limited parking, so I'm not sure what our best option is. Currently considering: putting up signs requesting people leave 60' of space in exchange for doughnuts and coffee, or something similar.

Smarter, more experienced Brooklynites, what should we do?

I was able to snag a decent spot with a moving van by parking near my building on an alternate side parking day (for street cleaning). About 30 minutes before the ASP time expired, I parked my van before other people had a chance. You'll see people doing this all over the borough. Good luck!

What neighborhood are you moving to and when do you need to park the truck near your place? Your need to strategize will vary widely. Park Slope on a Tuesday? Good luck. East Williamsburg on a Saturday? You should be so lucky. In a crowded neighborhood, signs promising donuts won't get you 60' of parking space.

60 feet - are you driving the truck? If you hired professional movers, let them be professional movers. Don't worry about.

If you are driving? Ugh - probably just double park in front of the place and suck up the tickets. Or at least take out a no standing zone.

No good answer here. Do your best to find a spot. If not, park in a way that doesn't block the street and hope for the best. Keep someone by the truck to talk the meter maids out of tickets.

Cowlick has it right: you double-park across the street until the end of alternate side parking for that day, move over either after the street sweeper goes by or until other people start moving over, whichever comes first, and you stay in the driver's seat until it's entirely over, at which point you can start moving your things.

Maybe have someone with you to ask people to give you a little room behind you, which most people will be cool with. You'll need room to move your things, and also to back up when you go to leave.

Good luck, it's not easy. Don't block traffic, but double park if you have to.

Why do you need 60' of space? A very very large tractor trailer bed is 50'...If you got the largest sized uhaul you should be well below this amount of space.
Since you will be mostly with the truck (I'm assuming you mean you need a space to park whilst moving your stuff in) I would say grab the nearest fire hydrant space. If a cop comes along you can drive around the block, but depending on what time of day and what part of brooklyn, there's potentially a good chance no cops will come around.
If you need to park it overnight (parking rental trucks or any commercial vehicle overnight on the street is illegal), underneath some parts of the BQE is public free parking and they've never ticketed the box truck rentals I've occasionally overnighted there.
Much of this depends on the neighborhood, street and day. For example, in bushwick on weekends on many streets there wouldn't be a problem.

Response by poster: Thanks for all the advice. We're moving to Carroll Gardens, and moving on a Thursday. We hired movers, but they have indicated that parking is our responsibility.

Sounds like our best bet is to hope for the best and move the truck as needed.

Best answer: I lived all over Queens and Brooklyn and I think I had a legal parking space once. As long as someone is with the truck at all times, you should be fine. Hydrants, driveways, double parking are all fair game. But if a cop comes and tells you to move it, you move it.

Response by poster: Great feedback from everyone. At least we're going in with our eyes open, now.

Parking is so valuable that no one will give you sixty feet of space without extremely aggressive tactics. I nth the double park idea.

Double park, mentally add $150 of potential parking tickets to your moving costs. No biggie.
