What to do near Karlsruhe

I'm headed to Karlsbad Germany next week, which is near Karlsruhe. I'll be there for a week on business, and am anticipating having most of the weekend free. Any suggestions as to what to do?

Hitting a spa has already been suggested, but I'd really like to get out and see something. I'm not much of a drinker, so that probably rules out much of what Germany has to offer, with the beer and all.

I didn't think Karlsruhe was that interesting.

You can get a ticket that will take you and four friends anywhere in Baden-Württemberg on Saturday and Sunday on slow trains and local transport for €23. Go to Heidelberg. I think the Christmas market will still be up, so see that. I hear Mannheim has an even better Christmas market, but Heidelberg is much prettier in general, and has a castle.

As grouse said, it is not too interesting in Karlsruhe. But it is easy to move around the Fatherland, so do so and go to xmas markets etc. Good stuff all around.

I've never been but my husband used to spend a considerable amount of time there for business. I've heard a number of times about the micro-brewery there called Der Vogelbräu. If you like beer - could be worth a visit.

If electronic and/or interactive art even has your faintest interest, please do pay a visit to the media museum in the ZKM. They have a vast and impressive collection of classic works in this genre. I see they have a little expo about the history of gaming, which is cool, because if it's in the ZKM, it still counts as culture. I also remember some killer Turkish kebab shops a few blocks from the building.

I'd totally rent a car and take a spin around the Black Forest - it's always been on my list of places to visit. Baden-Baden sounds neat too (all referenced in your Karlsruhe link).

My uncle lent one of his lumias to the Lichtkunst aus Kunstlicht show at the ZKM and I went to the opening. There's a castle there, too and an okay art museum. Can't tell you much about restaurants--I had dinner at the opening, the next night Krokodil with an old girlfriend of my father's and her friends and a chain place my last night--it was Saturday and I should have made a reservation somewhere that morning.

I often stayed in Karlsruhe after flying into Frankfurt en route to Strasbourg - and there is my suggestion - Strasbourg i about a 40 minute drive away (and I'm certain there is a bus/train).

Its a beautiful city with architecture, restaurants and even a pretty good nightlife.
