Italian Singer/Songwriters

I would like to listen to some singer/songwriters who sing in Italian.

I like straight forward acoustic style music (Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Kristin Hersh, Tom McRae, Emilíana Torrini, Eisley, etc.). I can give other examples if needed, but if you can read or sleep to it that's probably what I am looking for. Other styles is fine if it's damn good, otherwise I would like simpler music. The important thing is that it is in the Italian language.

Bonus points if available in the American iTunes store, but assume I can put my hands on a physical copy if needed (I have coworkers in Rome). I will also take recommendations for free downloads, but I am only interested in legal avenues of acquiring music.

I already know about Cristina Donà. She's pretty much exactly what I am looking for (though she tends to get a bit too chaotic and loud at times).

So your suggestions?

How about the most versatile singer of our era, Mike Patton, singing 1950's Italian pop with a full orchestra...

Mondo Cane

Paolo Conte, who is kind of in a French chanson style.

Also, Fabrizio de Andre, widely called the Italian Bob Dylan.

I was also going to recommend Paolo Conte. Carla Bruni has a few songs in Italian.

This article has a good overview of the history of Italian cantautori.

The last graf offers suggested albums:
"For those interested in getting to know more about Italian singer-songwriters, here is a short, but extremely dense, listening list: Luigi Tenco - 1965 - Luigi Tenco. Tutto Fabrizio De André - 1966 - Fabrizio De André. Rimmel - 1975 - Francesco De Gregori. Com'è profondo il mare - 1977 - Lucio Dalla. La voce del padrone - 1981 - Franco Battiato. Bollicine - 1983 - Vasco Rossi. L'albero - 1997 - Lorenzo Jovanotti. Canzoni a manovella - 2000 - Vinicio Capossela"

Vasco is more along the lines of Italy's version of Keith Richards; Jovanotti is the intellectual wordsmith forefather of spaghetti rap. They are both excellent in their respective genres.

I have a 4 disc compilation Lucio Battisti that I could read to, though YMMV. Another 2 who come to mind when I think Italian singer/songwriter would be the recently deceased Pino Daniele and Luciano Ligabue, though they are in the blues/rock vein.

Off the top of my head (some already recommended): Lucio Battisti, Fabrizio De Andrè, Lucio Dalla, Francesco Guccini, Domenico Modugno. YMMV if they're what you're looking for or not, but they're amply available on, say, YouTube to get a taster before you buy anything, and at least some songs from each ought to qualify.

Gianmaria Testa's album La Valse d'un Jour is one of my go-to sleepy/reading music discs. It doesn't seem to be on the UK iTunes at least, though some of the songs from it appear on his Solo dal Vivo live album and there are plenty more of his records to choose from.

Bruno Lauzi, Alphataurus [look at that amazing album cover], seconding Modugno.
