Where's the chillest Mexico vacation?

The ladyfriend and I would like to decamp to Mexico for a week or two after Christmas. We are definitely not the frat-party/Cancun types. We're more of the "This hut on the beach is $20 a night and has no electricity" types. And this totally an off-the-grid/lay on the beach sitch.

I have fond memories of crashing in Thailand on barely populated islands that just had a bar or two and if there's a way to make that work, I'd love to know about it.

We had recommendations for Tulum, but it sounds a little precious. At any rate- Suggestions for locations/accommodations/excitement are most welcome!

It's been a decade or so since I was there, but what you describe sounds a lot like Zipolite and nearby villages on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca.

Everywhere in Mexico can be this place if you have the right attitude and knowledge. A great place to start getting that specific information is in The People's Guide to Mexico. It is more than 700 pages of little-known finds and treasures all over the whole country that fit your stated preferences, as well as excellent advice on how be the right kind respectful traveller in this awesome country.

And additionally, for the totally-kickass version of this book, but as a history book and not a travel guide, I also recommend Gods, Gachupines and Gringos. Maybe you are the kind of person who likes to read up on the history of a place before you go there. It's totally fine if you don't, also. No vacation should have homework assigned before you can go. But they are both really fantastic books.

Todos Santos? or Pie de la Cuesta?

I fear Todos Santos is going to be lost to the tourism juggernaut that is Cabo, but it was great while it lasted.

Baja is beautiful...you could camp at Playa Balandra or Playa El Tecolote.

Caye Caulker in Belize might be worth checking out. There's basically nothing to do except snorkel and lay on the beach and drink at the one beach bar. And no cars.

The Placencia area of Belize is also like this. We stayed at a place called the Green Parrot and were in a hut pretty similar to the one you describe, though it had a beer fridge.

Otherwise, La Paz on the Baja peninsula is great. I don't know much about the resorts (we kayaked around Espiritou Santo) but it's very non-frat-boy.

Barra de Navidad or Melaque.

Check out this site...https://www.tomzap.com/barra.html.

I rented a three bedroom condo on the beach for under $700 for nine days. Of course Xmas will probably be more expensive. I loved this little laid back town.
