Amsterdam accomodations in July/August

We are planning a week long trip to Amsterdam this summer and would like some neighborhood recommendations. We use VRBO a lot, because we like to stay in an actual apartment in a real neighborhood for many reasons. I'm looking for some advice on narrowing down the areas we should look in.

We are late-fifties, like to walk and explore new cities, will try to hit all the museums, are not averse to renting bikes for a day or two, and can usually navigate mass transit with ease. We only speak English. Not looking to party much, but will probably check out some evening music/nightlife. We like to spend our days hitting the touristy highlights mixed with getting a good feel of the neighborhood we stay in. Pubs, coffee shops, restaurants, quirky off-the-beaten-path, history, etc. But again, would like somewhere that would avoid language barriers.

I've read all the tagged posts and will probably follow up with more questions.

Thanks!

Not that this helps narrow it down but, anywhere within the Canal Ring, the Jordaan, or the Pijp. VRBO, and especially AirBnB, have tons of listings. The West is currently very trendy with locals and you could look there if you want to feel more away from the touristic areas. I really recommend the Jordaan. It's where I live 3 months out of the year.

Amsterdam is small and compact you can easily walk to all major sites. If you get tired or late you can jump on a tram. www.9292.nl/en will give you door-to-door public transport directions anywhere in the country.

You'll have no problem whatsoever speaking English only.

I'm happy to answer more questions.

I just spent about a week there for work. If I went back with free reign, I would definitely try to stay in the Jordaan. You will have good walking access to a lot of the sights and it is very very charming, with narrow neighborhoody cafe-lined streets and pretty canal houses.

If I were staying longer than a week, I'd probably look into the Pijp or other neighborhoods but for just a week, the Jordaan all the way.

The Jordaan is a great place to stay; lots of restaurants and shops, and it's quieter than the touristy parts of the canal rings.

You might also be interested in the eastern end of Oud-Zuid. It's a pricier neighborhood, but there are some beautiful old homes there, and it puts you right next to Museumplein and the Vondelpark.

The Zeehelderbuurt, just west of Central Station, has quite a few rentable apartments and is both in the center and out of the tourist madness. It's a lovely area, and only a 15 minute walk to the Jordaan.
