MeFi, help me name my new dog?
May 12, 2015 10:45 AM   Subscribe

We are adopting this puppy right here, and I'd love some help with name ideas!

He is currently regrettably called "Spot", but as he's only 8 weeks I think he's not aware enough of that to be embarrassed by the cliche name. He's arriving up in New Jersey having been saved from a kill shelter in North Carolina. I'm open to names of any sort, funny, unusual, or regal. Not a huge fan of using regular dude names for dogs, though.

You feel like you could do something the obvious eye patch, but I'm not sure! TIA!

Name him Baxter, which is the first thing that popped into the head of a stranger on the internet

He looks like a Bruce to me, but I'm not sure why. If that's not regal enough, try Sirius.

Aw! He's Nipper, the name of the dog from the 1899 His Master's Voice painting of the dog and the gramophone.

With that spot he looks like he's wearing a monocle. So I vote for Fritz or Wilkins.

Clearly, the eyepatch means he is a pirate. North Carolina "claims" such pirates as "Calico Jack" Rackham. So there ya go. "Rack" for short.

Response by poster: Good stuff so far, thx!

RoU_Xenophobe: We did have "Barkson Pollock" on our current list, I'm mildly ashamed to admit.

He reminds me of the dog from the RCA logo, so I'd go with "Nipper" (the name of the aforementioned RCA dog).

I'm going to keep suggesting "Beanplate" as a pet name in these threads until someone takes me up on it ;)

Gordon - Gordy for short. (That was my first reaction upon seeing him.)

I also thought he was a Baxter as soon as I saw him.

Barkimedes or Barkley might work too.

No eyepatch reference, but I shouted Roscoe (in my head) when I clicked on his picture. Totally adorable!

He seriously reminds me of the adorable Tige, Buster Brown's toon dog.

I looked at that (adorable!) puppy and knee-jerk reaction says his name is Ralphie. But I like Baxter, too.

OMG....I feel like I could answer this question better if I could spend some time with him. Please send puppy immediately, and I'll get back to you with a name in 20 years or so.

TV Guide's annoyingly-formatted list of fictional characters with eye patches. I wish I could think of a good canine pun for Colonel Tigh.

I would also endorse "Rooster" or "Cogburn."

Scout

Though I do like Baxter as well (how is everyone spontaneously coming up with the same name? am I missing a reference?).

Clearly, that is Mad Eye.

Not so clearly, Full Stop (because the spot looks like a period).

Obliquely, Snake (after Snake Plisskin, the most awesome eye-patched movie character ever).

But personally, I'd stick with Spot. It's an awesome name because everyone thinks it's so cliched that they don't use it, making it unique.

He's from North Carolina. So:
Tarheel
Barbecue
Grits
Sir Walter Raleigh
Duke (I wouldn't choose this one. Just felt I had to include it because it's only fair. But don't choose it.)
Plott (rhymes with Spot, and the plott hound is NC's state dog)
Carolina

Captain Hook (Captain for short). You can have Neverland flavored conversations with him. "Aye aye, Captain" "HOOOOK!" "Tick tock, Hook, tick tock"

His name shall be Wooster.
Wooster Cogburn.
See: https://goo.gl/gjGQiz

Wooster because "Rooster" is a silly name for a dog. Also, you can have fun talking strangely to him: "Want to go for a wun, Wooster?"

What do I win?
