How do you commission a custom desk?

I ride my bike on an indoor trainer in the winter and I would like to have a custom desk made to be able to work while I ride.
There are plenty of suggestions (like use a side table, or ironing board, etc) to rest your computer on but these don't work for me. I know what I want, and how I want it to function. For example, I'd like to be able to bring my computer closer and higher when I am in an upright position and move it away and down when I am riding in my drops. I am looking for function and do not care about materials or appearance. Who can I ask to help me with this project?

Best answer: A custom cabinetmaker would make something really nice, but any decent carpenter can make you something functional. If you have a locally-owned lumberyard or hardware store, they're sure to have a good list of carpenters who could help you out.

My folks have something similar to this and it has a wide adjustment range. If you have a light computer you would be fine.

You might be able to get something off the shelf, there are sit-stand desks with casters out there, like the GeekDesk, but there are plenty others.

You said you already know exactly what you want but I use a couple of Ergotron mounts with my Cintiqs and find their overall quality to be really good. You might consider incorporating one of their systems into the design instead of hiring someone to engineer the whole thing from scratch.

This is a ready-made option for use with a trainer, if you're looking for ideas.
