Looking for real ride-sharing driver stories, from SF Bay Area

I'm thinking of signing up to drive for Uber, Lyft, Sidecar. I would love to hear from people who are actually driving for these companies, and *especially* from those who drive for more than one and can give actual comparisons of what it's like for the different services they drive for. I want to know the pros and cons of each company.
I need to buy a new(er) car. The car I pick for myself may not be the optimal car for ride-sharing driving needs. I'm hoping to learn more about what ride sharing is like before I pick which car I'm buying. The "try it and see how you like it" model doesn't work if I can't try it at all with the car I'm currently driving (too old).
Among the specific things I'd love to know:
1) How often do you drive "deadhead" from a customer's location back to a more central location to be positioned to pick up another rider?
2) Do you schedule your driving to be available when "surge" pricing is most likely to go into effect?
3) Did you tell your insurance company you are driving for a ride sharing company?
4) How long does it take for you to get paid?
5) I am particularly interested in knowing how it works in the far flung regions, e.g. is there much work for drivers in the Santa Cruz, or Monterey, or Hollister, or Livermore areas?
6) What was the most unexpected thing you learned after you started working that you want me to know about what it is really like?
