Producing a two-person video/audio conversation on my iPad mini

I want to record two people talking to each other on my iPad (with iPad video) but I want better sound than the iPad mic itself provides. What's the best way to do this?

The set-up is the following:

Two people are looking at themselves on my iPad mini and talking to each other. If I want to record their speech directly into the iPad and I want them to each have their own microphone, what would be a good way to do this?

I have a simple splitter, the thing that goes into the mic jack and you can then plug a mic (with a small, cellphone-sized jack) into each of the two inputs. Then I need two mic's that are better than the average earbud-with-mic that most of us use when we talk on our cell phones.

here is a website that shows a lot of interesting options, some with lightning connectors (which is what I have on my iPad mini), some not.

What would be a good set-up? Should I assume that if the two people are sitting close enough to each other to be video-recorded in the same screen that they are going to be too close to have their own separate mics without giving each other awful feedback? Should I, therefore, just get one mic and have them speak into it, maybe moving it a little each time?

It's okay to see that they're speaking into microphones. They "know" that in this movie (breaking the fourth wall). But I don't want the mic's to take the viewer's attention away from what they're saying too much, that is,if they're switching one mic back and forth between them.

Should I get two lavalier mic's and somehow put them into my (or some other) splitter?

I own a "Snowball" mic which is supposed to be able to record e.g. a person singing and playing the guitar at the same time but I'm pretty disappointed in this mic. It's really not very powerful.

Any ideas for what to do in this case? thanks. I could bite the bullet and get a separate audio recorder and mic them above their heads etc. in standard making-a-movie style, but I kind of wanted to do something more primitive and self-conscious ("here we are recording ourselves talking into the iPad")

Oh also I would much appreciate links to any forums that discuss this sort of thing.

You're in a unique situation and asking a lot from an iPad. It's not impossible, unless you're expecting crazy professional results--and I'm assuming that's not the case since you're using an iPad.

I'm a pro video person who is used to a lot of funky things.

In my experience, it is possible to get great results out of unprofessional equipment, however, you have to try a lot of strategies out before the best solution becomes obvious.

If you're on a budget and don't have a lot of time then I'd order your favorite option from the web page you linked to and see how it goes. Return it if you don't like it.

If you've got some room on your credit card and you need a solution right away then order a lot of different solutions and test them against each other and return the rest.

You're gonna have to be strange lucky to find someone who has experience with this exact problem. It's too unique. Don't worry: the best ideas are ones in this category.
