setting up my Photoshop docs

I'm using this tutorial to try to create weather icons in Photoshop - I'm having trouble getting the shapes to appear at the right sizes.

I'm trying to create a 50px x 20px rounded rectangle size. When I follow the instructions in the tutorial, I get a tiny speck instead of the rectangle i see in the tutorial. What could I be doing wrong? I don't have a lot of PS experience but have been working with pixels enough through work that I don't think 50px x 20 px *should* appear as a speck.

I have the background layout set up so that I can see the whole grid, as they have it in the tutorial.

I'm not sure what other information to give but can answer questions. I feel like I'm missing something obvious so be nice if I am, thanks!

zoom in? If your original size was/is usually 8.5 x 11 at 300dpi, and you change to 50px at 72 dpi, it will appear as a spec. Try zooming in until you're happy with the size.

Response by poster: yes, set at 72 pixels/inch. Zooming in doesn't help as I should be able to see a 50x20 image on a mobile layout as not a speck.

Ctrl-Alt-0 for 100% zoom level?

(A screenshot of your screen might help us diagnose what you are seeing.)
