a yearning for the cartoons of yore

I'm looking for a show that was on the kid's channel nickelodeon in the mid to late 80's.

The show featured cartoon adaptations of classic works of literature. The only story I can specifically remember was the phantom of the opera. I can't recall if there was just one episode produced, or if it was a series.

Hmm. Are you maybe thinking of Special Delivery? As I recall, this was Nick's equivalent of "the Saturday afternoon movie" -- a grab-bag on which they played any movies and non-series-length shows they had on the shelf. Lots more on this site, among other places.

Nickelodeon had a show called "Grimm's Fairy Tales and Storybook Series" that fits your description. There was one of Beauty and the Beast that bothered me horribly because it made the beast look like a hairy purple monk.

Here are some screenshots if that helps.

Might it have been a showing of this animated version of Phantom of the Opera, released in 1988?

When I saw Phantom at Pantages, the phantom was played by the guy "Jeff" (Jeff Hyslop) on today's special. I believe this show had cartoons, but it wasn't "cartoon heavy." Fairly interesting coincidence with the 80's nick and the phantom and the like.
