Who was the warm up comic on the Daily Show in 2008?

Based on this essay: who are the most likely candidates for who this warm up comic would have been?

The comic was almost certainly not a well-known comic, probably and old comedian friend who supported Stewart early in his career who he thew a bone to - against his better judgment - and was almost certainly put in a position of having to fire said loyal friend after the show as a result of the essayist's question. At least that's my take on it from watching too many episodes of Larry Sanders.

It may have been Paul Mecurio. Pete Holmes, in a discussion with Mark Normand about offensiveness in comedy, shared a similar sounding incident on his podcast (29:25-31:22).
