Please recommend books like William Greider's "Secrets of the Temple".

I am almost finished reading Secrets of the Temple and am enjoying it very much. What most appeals to me is: (1.) well-written, (2.) information-dense with stuff any participant in the modern economy can use but they never taught me in school such as -- (a.) e. g. the experts can be perfectly well-intentioned and still screw up because of complicated reasons and (b.) the chairman of the Federal Reserve can deliberately mislead the entire voting population about important decisions which have been made while clever insiders know what is going on.

I may be missing even more important lessons in the story but that's my take. The action in the book is almost all from 1979 - 1987 so I guess what would most interest me is similar works which would focus on time intervals which would be subsets of 1945 - 1979 or 1988 - 2008.
