Congress Hotel. Great lobby. Great rooftop bar.

Do check the room rates carefully, since some of the suites are in another building.

South Beach is okay, but the hotels there are going to have small rooms and may be noisy.

Consider going a bit North on Collins.

I stayed at the Fountainbleau before it was renovated. Great location, wonderful grounds. The Ritz-Carlton is at Collins and Lincoln Rd.

Lincoln Rd is a great pedestrian mall, with tons of shops and outdoor cafes. Stroll around, people watch, have a cocktail. It's all good.

I prefer the Shore Club to all else. It's not inexpensive but the poolside and beachside service are great, and starting at midrange the beachfront rooms are pretty spacious.

Oh God, please let me die at The Colony. If you want Ocean Drive and authentic Deco, the Colony is your man.

I like the Richmond. It is next to all the fancy ones and has a great relaxed pool and deco building. It is cheaper than the new luxury hotels but is still right in the heart of the action and right on the beach.

Absolutely the Raleigh. One of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. I would suggest room 713 or 715 if it's in your budget. Only rooms with balconies.

We stayed at the Loews and liked it a lot. Part of my decision was it was one of the few South Beach Hotels not listed on BedBugRegistry.com and I do have this phobia about bed bugs......
Loved the Loews! Not as cutting edge/ flashy/ hip as many of the boutique type hotels, but the service and cleanliness were absolutely outstanding; everything was high quality and classy. It was comfortable and well-run; would definitely stay there again
