Wordpress help, please -- frontpage links to categories?

Are there any frameworks or templates out there that would let me have a widget with a grid of image links to category blogs?

So I have a clear image of what I'd like to see on the frontpage of our new and improved Wordpress travel blog:
The top half would be a logo, menu, slider of featured posts, and selection of featured pages (rather like the demo of this theme: http://www.solostream.com/wordpress-themes/wp-enlightened/).

The second part is what I am having trouble with. I would like a grid of small images, each linking to a category blog. I can't seem to find anything like thing, although I'm pretty sure it can be done. Any pointers to themes? Or if this is something I would need to figure out how to do on my own, pointers to frameworks and advice?

If you put a file called home.php into your theme, it will use that for the front page instead of index.php. So you can put whatever in there just as static html.
