I Need To Hire Some Moving Help In Providence Next Week

Next week I'll be moving from NYC to Providence. I'll be driving a rental truck one way with all my stuff in it and as I'm new to Providence, I'm looking for recommendations for people to hire to help me unload the truck into my new place.

I've got a goodly amount of books and a fairly spare amount of furniture for a 1 BR apartment. The job probably won't take more than a couple of hours.

Welcome to PVD! Depending on when you arrive, I will try to help for a while. :7)

(I have a bunch of kids, with horribly tangled schedules, so dinnertime and the evening is right out -- but I bet I can sneak out of work for a while in the afternoon.)

Any moving company will do this, and they'll be bonded and insured. Pricier than putting up an ad on Craigslist, but likely worth it.

I recommend "You Move Me." You can hire just their guys. They don't have a location in Providence, but they have a MA area, so they might be able to help.

We got moved from a 2 story house to a garden apartment. They showed up early, offered to bring coffee and it only took 5 hours from start to finish for them to put us all back together again, including setting up the beds and placing the furniture exactly where I want it.

Can't say enough good things.

Best answer: I used Correira Brothers last January and they were fast-working and friendly. And also I think the cheapest quote I got from Hire a Helper. It will be even cheaper if all they have to do is unload.

Welcome to Providence!

There are a lot of small, local companies who charge by the hour: we hired Coutu Brothers to move a piano about ten miles, and they billed us a flat fee (despite my wife making one guy stand on one leg next tot he wall and hold his end of the instrument up with extended arms while she messed around with little cups for the thing's feet) of maybe $200 or $250. Nice guys, very patient, and they were careful with the piano and our new flooring. I put their rate page in that link.

There are also a lot of Man With A Van-type options; I am guess many of those will be on CL, and possibly in the yellow pages. You pays your money and you takes your chances. *shrug*

To move the data center here, we had the local Allied Van Lines agent show up to write the quote -- but in the end, I think they called a small, local firm. Gentle Giant is around here (I saw a truck on the highway yesterday with their cool livery), and all the other big, national companies (Allied, Mayflower, et al.) are in the area.

When I moved between apartments in Providence, I used MovingHelp.com. It's basically oDesk for movers/packers. You pick the number of people you want to help you move and the number of hours you think you'll need them, and it will provide you a list of quotes from local movers. You pre-pay with your credit card, and they essentially keep it in escrow until the job is finished - you just give the movers a code that releases the payment.

I think I paid around ~200 bucks for 2 guys to help me for three hours, which was about average.
