Looking for a YA novel about boats

I'm looking for a YA novel that was:
- published before 1989
- omniscient third-person narrator
- is set sometime between the 17th and 19th centuries
- is set on a large ship (a schooner, I believe)
I read a book matching this description as required reading in my eighth grade English class. Can you help me figure out what it was?
Patrick O'Brian's The Golden Ocean might fit, but it's not on a schooner.

This may be way off, as this novel is first person, but The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle?

Could've been one of the many ocean-going stories written by Stephen Meader -- his books are all available now at Southern Skies.
