How can I connect a desktop sata dvd burner to a netbook via usb for use? Obviously I need some kind of sata to usb adaptor but i can't seem to find an adaptor for plugging it into the wall. Can anyone help me out please?

A SATA Enclosure should also take care of the power for you.

Response by poster: would a harddrive enclosure work on a dvd drive?

You just need a USB to SATA adapter like this. They're nice and cheap and come in very handy.

I have one of these and love it. I've used it to power desktop optical drives before with no issue.

And yes, a hard drive enclosure will definitely work with a dvd drive if you need something more permanent than the adaptors mentioned. As long as the enclosure has a 5.25" drive space and the appropriate connector inside, that is.

If you're going to be using this a lot you can just get an external drive for close to the same price as an adapter.

$30 or so.

Seconding just getting a new drive. The cheapest one on newegg that isn't "open box"(although I'm a nutter and would buy that in a second. It's $10 cheaper than a drive!) is only 4 cheaper than a dedicated external drive. And those are also self-powered and tiny.
