Shoulder pain + yoga = ?

I am supposed to be doing a yoga class with my friend on Wednesday, this will be my first one in over a year, and I have some pain in my neck and shoulder at the moment, will this make it worse?

YANMD! I've had some pain in the right side of my neck and shoulder since Friday, and woke up this morning and the pain had travelled down to under the top of my arm. It's not particularly bad pain, and I went for a massage on Saturday which helped. I think it's probably related to posture at my desk and not taking enough breaks.

Should I cancel?

(I've browsed the archives and am working through the advice on posture at a desk etc, my question is specifically about this yoga class.)

Best answer: Let the teacher know, modify anything that's painful and you should be fine. I've been to yoga injured before and might have been store the next day but felt better in the point run.

It depends on the class and teacher. Round my way yoga classes can be really extreme and competitive. Have you considered Tai chi which I have found can be more accomodating of physical limitations.

Yes.
Relief for muscle strain is muscle rest. The absence of yoga.

It may depend on the type of yoga. Iyengar yoga, which uses a lot of props, is also very modifiable to suit the various injuries that people have. Talk to the teacher beforehand and explain, they will be able to suggest some modifications for you as you go. It sounds like you are going to a beginners' class; these usually aren't incredibly strenuous anyway and teachers are pretty understanding about injuries.

Best answer: Never do anything that hurts, basically. If you go to the class and decide it's not for you, you can leave partway through. Don't push yourself past whatever you're comfortable with.

TBH it sounds almost exactly what I have in my neck/left shoulder/left arm, which is unfortunately arthritis in my neck with nerve pinchyness. I do yoga every day and it is one of the few things that actually helps. YMMV, but if you start getting tingly in the pinky and ring finger of the affected arm, definitely see a doctor.

Best answer: Definitely tell the yoga instructor. If they are any good, they'll either alter the practice for the day or let you know any alternate poses to accommodate your injury.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone! It is a beginners class so I will be mindful and warn the instructor.
