Transportation between Brooklyn and Southold, New York

Next Monday I have to get from Brooklyn to Southold, New York. I can't take the train because it doesn't get in until about noon, which is too late for me to make my meeting. Are there any alternatives, such as buses? Or is there another station I should consider taking a train to, and then taking a cab to Southold? I might also be able to have someone pick me up from someplace that is not too far from Southold, if that is an option. Thanks in advance for the help!

If LIRR is not an option and the issue is timeliness, I'd pick up a ZipCar from a Brooklyn lot. It's about a 100 mile trip on the expressway. It's a reverse commute so it might only take you a couple of hours. That said, I'd be sure to ask someone who regularly travels to Long Island and is more familiar than myself with the traffic conditions what time you need to leave.

The Hampton Jitney operates bus service to the North Fork, including Southold. Here is their schedule (PDF). You would have to either depart from Manhattan or their "airport connection" option in Queens. It looks like the earliest you'd be able to get out there is 11:25am. (The second column on the eastbound side says "Also available Mon & Sat, May & June.")

Do you drive? Go to Hertz, Avis, National and many others. If you don't ask a driver friend to take you. Southold is a beautiful place for your friend to relax during your meeting, and you can spring for lobsters afterward.
