Birthday Snacky Restaurant

Hey! I'm in Toronto, it's my b-day tomorrow, and I want to go out for a night of wine and tapas in the west end of Toronto. I'm a real-food eating, grains-avoiding type, and there will be a vegetarian with us. I love Black Hoof, Catch, and The Ace. What else can you recommend?

First of all, Happy Birthday.

Instead of Spanish Tapas and Sangria, how about Japanese nibblies and sake?

Guu Izakaya touts itself as a Japanese Tapas Place.

Izakaya are little drinking places for Japanese office guys. It's a regular hang out. They have their own bottle, and they drink and nibble with their buddies until it's time to go home.

There's a downloadable menu on the website, but you can see that there's something for everyone on it. You can have sashimi, your veggie friend can have miso, edemame and tempura. The bar-be-que has my attention.

I used to hang out at one of these places when I lived in California and it was so fun!

Heads up, I'm not in Toronto (but I'd like to be) so I'm not 100% sure this is in your area. But it looks nice and I can attest, it's yummy!

Also, some raw things, quite a few cooked things.

Bon Appetite!

I thought Archive wine bar (909 Dundas West) might fit the bill. I haven't been there, but it's the same owners as Ortolan, which I like a lot. The snacks might be a bit too bread-centric for you though. Check the menu online.

Seconding Guu, it is a blast. Perfect for a birthday. If you let the server know the entire staff will burst into song for you.

How about Torito for tapas in Kensington Market? But, I agree, Guu is amazing if you don't want tapas.

You definitely need to go to 416 Snack Bar. Go!

The Atlantic on Dundas is wonderful (and can even accommodate true celiacs - no mean feat!)

Archive is a worth a visit and it's right near the Black Hoof and its fellows, so easy to drop into for a drink. Further west along Dundas is the Midfield wine bar.
