sci fi story - man dies in a car crash, nobody can see him

Name that sci-fi book/story! This week's edition: man dies in a car crash, nobody can see him, sailors and baddies abound in this ghost-world.

This is all I have to go on from a customer who came in and asked about it today. He says it's an older work. Any thoughts?

Not a car crash, but maybe The Third Policeman?

Was it Barbara and Scott Siegel's Ghostworld series?

Eve Bunting's The Ghosts of Departure Point also involves car crashes.

Sheckley's Immortality Inc has the hero dying in a car crash and there are baddies but no sailors and I don't think there is invisibility. It's an older classic SF novel from 1959 from a master writer.

Sounds a tiny bit like a scrambled summary of Topper, depending on how you define baddies.
