I'm studying abroad at Kangwon National University in about a month. I'm looking for student stories both on and off campus, classroom or homestay experiences, or warnings about the surrounding area or school for anyone who has studied there in the past.

That's great that you are traveling there. I'm not sure you will get many answers here from students that have studied there. There might be more ex-patriate English teachers that have experience living in that area. Seems like it is a few hours away from Seoul. I had a coworker that came from there and it was cold and there was lots of snow during the winters. He really disliked the food but seems like it is popular for Dak Galbi which is delicious. You might try browsing Daum and searching for 춘천 강원대학교. There have a google map like service and you can see the streets and roads.

I'm not sure if you consider a town of 250,000 as small but it's not likely to have many familiar things. Wikitravel has a good article of some popular things to do there. You'll need to visit E-mart or Homeplus for regular shopping. South Korea is relatively safe. Make sure you keep your door locked. You might read up on what being a student in South Korea is like. Do you have any particular questions about the area?
