what was the name and artist behind a 1990s r&b jam?
The song came out sometime before 1996. It was a male artist. I want to say that it was not a solo artist but a group like tony toni tone! or something like that.
The verse hook was a guy doing some kind of scat singing. It went doo doot doot doo doot. doot doo doot doot doooo doooo doot.
It sort of a mid tempo song similar to P.m. Dawn's "set adrift on memory bliss"
the verse hook may have been a sample of a much earlier song from the 1960s.
that's all I've got.

Us 3, Cantaloop. I can't easily link it on my phone, but search for it.

That's not the version I was thinking of--not sure this is it, either, but there's one that has more of the doot de doot etc. from the original Lou Reed.

Response by poster: It's not us3. That song is too fast to be what I remember. I might be throwing everyone off by referring to it as "scat" singing. It was a pretty simple melody sung with doot doot doos.

It's not Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch's version of Walk on the Wild Side is it? That would be an order of magnitude more embarrassing than Johnny Gill.

Now that I am not on my phone, and for future reference, here is a (currently) working version of Cantaloop. Man, that was a great video for its time.

This is so not an R&B track, but any chance it's Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth With Money in My Hand? It has a pretty faithful "doo doot doot too doot" and samples a 1964 BB King tune.

Best answer: After extensive research, I've discovered that the song I'm thinking of is "Tom's diner" by DNA.

At the risk of saying something obvious, 'Tom's Diner' is not an r&b song by a male group, but a techno remix of a folk-pop song by a solo female artist.

You know what, I thought of that, but figured it was not a realistic possibility! Thanks for coming back and letting us know..

I was thinking it was this, but I couldn't remember its name, or even who sang it. I was thinking Brand New Heavies or Soul II Soul or somebody.
