Need help identifying caterpillar.

My young son and I were out in the yard today (North Central Texas) and came across this beautiful creature. Any experts out there who can help us identify it?

Best answer: My best guess is the spiny oak slug, Euclea delphinii.

Response by poster: Is it eating my Red Oak tree? I thought he was a friend!

Well, if it's just this little guy, he's not gonna eat the whole tree! Unless you've got an outbreak, caterpillars are friends :) Well, except you don't want to handle this little friend too much, because he'll probably give you an itchy rash.

If you're interested in more gorgeous (and insane-looking) caterpillars, this guy is in the family Limacodidae, all of which look pretty neat.
