Help me find this amazing film

MovieFilter: It's about a painter who thinks turpentine kills emotions. But what's it called?
Can't remember the name but it's an amazing film!
Here's what I can remember of the plot:
- The main character is a painter who believes that exposure to turps somehow kills your emotions.
- His daughter makes graves for dead animals.
- His son paints one of the walls of their house black.
- I think it's a Northern European film, probably from the 90s.
Any help much appreciated. I've tried google and imdb many times.
And if we figure it out, then find it and watch it! It's great! :)
