Chaco tacos in NYC?

Chaco tacos in NYC? I must have one. But where?

I love chaco tacos. But since moving to NYC two years ago, I can't seem to find them anywhere. Not on ice creams trucks, not in bodegas, no where! I live in North Brooklyn and am willing to travel if you can tell me for certain that you've seen them somewhere recently. Not "oh I think maybe I saw some last summer at this place in Coney Island". I'm hoping that there is someone who loves them as much as I do and has a reliable place to pick them up.

Also, I know there are recipes to make them yourself online, but I don't want to make them. I want to buy the real thing.

Hope me!

Choco Taco. Not Chaco Taco.

Best bet is at an ice cream truck near a playground. Otherwise, call up Good Humor and ask them where they sell Choco Tacos in your neighborhood.

Choco Tacos are now made by Klondike. They have a website that includes a zip code product locator.

That zip code product locator either doesn't work or they're not sold anywhere -- I tried zipcodes for San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Boston, Atlanta, and Phoenix and they all came back "The Zip or City State code is either invalid or no data is available for it."

Response by poster: Choco not chaco, yes, thanks for the correction.

Also, I tried 8 different zipcodes so far on the website, and it says there is no data available for those zipcodes, so again, back to the hive mind to see if anyone has laid actual eyes on things.

Response by poster: eyes on *the* things

I have seen them at the C-Town on the Lower East Side but that was at least 2 summers ago.

Meanwhile, depending on your level of desperation, there are 4 Wal-Marts in Jersey that appear to have them in stock right now.

(according to their "check local store availability" thingy, I mean.)

Sorry, thought that would work. They're available at Wal*Mart, and a search for NY, NY gives these results:

Walmart# 3520-Secaucus
400 Park Pl
Secaucus, NJ 07094

Do you have Aldi there? If so, call and ask as they have been spotted in some branches. Otherwise WalMart appears to be your best bet.

I'll look at my corner stores and get back to you if I see anything.

3 Waldbaums locations out on the Island

a multitude of tri-state area locations

(see other locations by clicking the "not your location" thingy)

I have become weirdly invested in this.

I bought a box at Stop and Shop two weeks ago, out in CT. It looks like there are two S&S in Brooklyn, if that works for you. You can probably call them first to be extra sure. (S&S store locator.)

Response by poster: Thanks for the answers so far. I'm hoping to find something in the city so that I can buy a load of them and get them home before they melt. So, I'm willing to go as far as Harlem or so, but I can't really get to NJ and back in a reasonable amount of time, and I don't think I'm willing to get a car for this venture. And I have a feeling there are some hiding in some bodegas somewhere that won't be listed on the website. If you find me some, I'll buy you one!

If your local grocery carries Klondike or Good Humor but not Choco Tacos, ask them to get them. I have had great luck getting hard to find products by asking the store to carry them. It is likely just a matter of the store asking the distributor to carry them.

In this 2009 news story, Frank Bruni, a former NY Times food critic, apparently got his choco taco from a Mister Softee truck. I couldn't get the Mister Softee truck locator or online store to work, but you might have better luck.

You might want to try and make your own.

Apparently, you can get them on Amazon -- if you're willing to pay ~$50.00 in shipping.

I'm in Chicago and I've recently bought them at Target and Wal-Mart.

Get an insulated lunch cooler and go as far as you need to get them!!

Also, I'm in Dallas and they have them in Blockbuster video stores, in an ice cream freezer of single serve snacks. I don't know if they have those in the NY stores.

I just bought a box at the A&P in Riverdale last night. Is there an A&P near you?

Apparently, you can get them on Amazon

That seller has terrible feedback, though.

It's certainly not a bulk source, but I've ordered them at Taco Bell.

I know I bought some -- out of curiosity, having heard of them but never gotten to try one -- within the last six months or so. I don't remember where, but I'm 90% sure it was my usual store, Fairway in Brooklyn (Red Hook). It's also possible it was the Key Food in Park Slope (11th Ave-ish), or possibly the Key Food in Prospect Heights (Vanderbilt & Sterling).

I should be at Fairway tomorrow, I'll post an update if I see them. Good luck!

I saw a sign for them on the ice cream truck in Washington Square Park Wednesday.

A month late, but I just saw them right this second at the Sonoco station convenience store at 47th and 11th Avenue
