Novel about Harvard research lab?

Help me find the name of a novel about a Harvard research lab.

I read this about a decade back (I think), and have been trying to find a copy as a gift for my sister-in-law who's a Harvard Med School student, interning in a genetics lab there.

The book is about a lab in Cambridge, and the main character is a young-ish researcher in the lab. Initially, he's not having much luck with his study (which I think involves genetics and rats?), though things turn around rather dramatically for him, and he starts seeing great results, at least for a while.

There's a female in the lab that he's either in a relationship with, or would like to be. And I seem to recall that the head of the lab is a distance runner.

Anyway, I've been Googling away, to no avail, as nearly everything I try ends up with hits related to 'novel' research rather than to a novel about research. Help!

Possibly Intuition, by Allegra Goodman?

As She Climbed Across The Table doesn't match exactly, but is great and might be fun in a similar way (sadly without the Harvard connection).

A bit of a long shot, but maybe Cantor's Dilemma, by Carl Djerassi? (Who knew, apparently lab lit is a thing, according to Wikipedia anyway!)

Chiming in with Intuition, as mauvest said.
