Recommendations for NYC

Give me your personal recommendations for things to do, events to participate in, places to see, etc in New York City for the summer please!
I will be located conveniently right outside of new york city this summer for an internship with great access to the city, but no prior experience with either new york city or other large cities, and I'm looking for your recommendation on things to do, taking the following into consideration:
- I'm only here from now until the second week of August
- I'm interning Mon-Fri 9-5, so activities for the nights or on the weekends preferred
- Money is not really an issue but I'm not looking for "living the high life" experiences simply for their own sake
I'm keeping this question open ended because I'm open to pretty much anything. Did you really enjoy taking some classes on some unusual topic in the city? Or is there a really really beautiful church you've been to? Or a cool club? Or an amazing exhibition? Tell me about it!

I always, always recommend a trip to Brighton Beach in answer to these (many, oft-asked) questions. Food from M&I International is a requirement.

Mod note: If you need to tell someone that this question has been asked before, use your civil tones. Thank you.

Older threads will tell you where to eat and shop and drink and enjoy, but *this* summer, if you are interested in a fascinating and unique experience that you won't be able to shut up about, get tickets NOW for Sleep No More. That won't be here the next time you come back. My dreams take place in this show now.

I would recommend exploring more than anything. If you aren't familiar with big cities, this is the quintessential one to walk around in. It will seem vast, but remember it's also a series of small villages jammed together. You will never get bored wondering what's around the next corner.
And take the 7 train out to Queens, where every stop is like emerging into a new country.
(But really, your question is a bit too open-ended. Start looking at Time Out NY for a sense of how much is happening at any given time.)

Next weekend, I'd take the free ferry out to Governor's Island for the Figment festival.
I also plan to see the show at the Museum of Art and Design highlighting work that employs miniature sets.
I'll also be checking out the newest section of the High Line, which is supposed to have quite a different feel from the already-existing sections.
Not a recommendation, because I haven't yet been, but I'd like to try out the food truck Korilla Korean BBQ (locations posted on Twitter).

Oh yeah, and I've always wanted to do the free kayaking offered thru Downtown Boathouse.

Now that the Highline is a public park, it's really just one big long path. Not so much for exploration. And it will probably be a bit crowded.
Seconding Sleep No More. Unlike any other play really, ever. Pricey but totally worth it. Go with a friend or two. But explore separately. And compare experiences at the end.
Also the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met is very buzzy right now.

For "church", the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, up near Columbia University (111th and Amsterdam; the University's main entrance is 116th and Broadway/Amsterdam).
If you can bike, rent one and go up the Hudson River Greenway, from the Battery up to the George Washington, or further up to Ft. Tryon Park.

Coincidentally I just made a list two days ago of things I want to do this summer (which I fear will be my last in New York). So here they are:
- Visit the new section of the High Line, which will open some time later in June
- Go to Governor's Island and spend the day there
- Museum Mile Festival on June 14th
- Go see a Brooklyn Cyclones game (season starts on June 17th methinks)
- Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, perhaps go to the ball this year (June 18th)
- Thursday Movies at the Brooklyn Bridge Park, starting on July 7th
- Summer Streets on August 6th, 13th and 20th from 7am to 1PM
Hope this helps!
