Is a drug test required for a DOT medical card?

Drug-testing filter: A friend of mine is working for a non-profit domestic (USA) organization and was asked to get a DOT health/medical card to drive a truck/trailer combination in excess of 10,000 lbs, carrying heavy equipment. Will a drug test be required?

Response by poster: Not sure if my friend's company requires the drug test. The real question is whether a drug test is a required part of the DOT medical exam.

Best answer: Assuming I'm correctly understanding who this stuff applies to (which it's possible I'm not):

According to this, yes. (If you search that page for "Part 382", it'll tell you that DOT 382.301-382.311 requires the following six tests: Pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up testing.

Here is a link to the actual rules. This says who the section applies to, and this is the part specifically referencing pre-employment testing.

Best answer: Oh, that doesn't say it's required as part of the DOT medical exam, exactly, but that rather drivers are required to get one before they drive, otherwise the Employer is acting illegally.

Best answer: We're required to test our drivers - it's not our choice, as brainmouse quoted above - but they do it on our site (rarely) or at our designated screening facility. We spend a boatload of money on the tests. And yeah, when someone already works for us and we add driving to their duties, they have to get tested. It just doesn't happen at the doctor's office. They're only needed to help in filling out a form.

Response by poster: Thank you, metafilter, for clarifying this so quickly and thoroughly. My respect.

Best answer: First you need a Class A Driver's License to drive a tractor trailer over 10,000lbs. He should know that if he already has a Class A license that DOT requires drug test!!! I really don't think a non-profit is up on the laws governing Commercial Drivers Licenses--that they would tell him to get a DOT physical and your good to go. I would personally not want to be driving anywhere near this dude.
