Derby Name Game
April 4, 2011 1:31 PM   Subscribe

Another "Help me pick a derby name" request... Brooklyn Brewser, Tricky Spillane and Sis Boom Bootie have been nixed.

I need to come up with my derby name and fast. Wanna help?

About me:

I was born and bred in Brooklyn but now live in the south
I am 6' tall
I am in my early thirties
I love Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and classic rock in general; also Talking Heads and T Rexx
I drive an old Scout International
I love beer and bourbon
I own guns
I am a feminist
I love hardboiled fiction - Jim Thompson, Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler are my favorites
Contrary to the above, I am not a lesbian
I am a blocker who uses lotsa booty and hip

Brooklyn Brewser, Tricky Spillane and Sis Boom Bootie have been nixed (though what kind of asshole wouldn't like sis boom bootie?) are already taken (Sammy Automatic, Boom Boom)

Care to help a rollergirl out?

Do you have your official rollergirl picture online somewhere so we can get a better sense of your persona?

Where in the south are you?

Best answer: I only have one request, if you're going to go the "pun/wordplay" route ---BY GOD KEEP IT TO ONE PUN PER NAME! For example, I heard about someone kicking around the name Maryland MonRage. NONO! Maryland Monroe -- fine. Marylin MonRage -- fine I guess... Maryland MonRage -- ONE JOKE TOO MANY!

(Sorry, just had to insert my little derby name pet peeve there.)

Anyway I've had this one up my sleeve for a while..."Lisa Injection."

Anyway good luck and knock em dead, kid.

Without knowing you, I'd say something like Dixie Kickin's.

Agreed. I'm keeping it in my back pocket.

You all should quit your day jobs and do this full time. Lick-her Cabinet??? That is fantastic.

Although I see Craisy Dukes (who plays for RI) is not actually on the TwoEvils list. Looks like there's another Charlotte skater by the name of Lykr C'leen.

Flipping Bashiell Hammett around, how about Dashiell Hammer?

Bourbon Belle?

Few people in NC are going to know the neighborhoods in BK, so the joke will be lost on them. Yankee Ripper?

Best answer: Too-close-to-taken or not, I think "Sis Boom Body" sounds better than "booty."

Leaning toward Scout Flinch, as a compound of your Scout International and your southernness.

Must-hang Sally?! Yes!

Also Crystal Chaos

How are women usually referred to in these hardboiled novels? Toots? Legs for Miles?

Maybe a play on a female spy or detective: Nancy Drill?

Can you play with Tina Weymouth's name, as a Talking Heads fan? Something like Tina Trashmouth or Tina Bigmouth?

Red Harvest is Dinah Brand (though Whisper and MacSwain are great names too); Brigid O'Shaughnessy in Maltese Falcon and Effie Perine was Sam Spade's secretary. Too obscure a reference?

Best answer: Southern Discomfort's taken, but that's a great one!

FYI--this is the master list of roller derby names. Not all of them are from WFTDA skaters, but as far as I've encountered, people use it as the resource for confirming your name is still available. The catch, as I understand it, is that it takes a while for your league to sponsor your name and get the OK, so you may be skating as Southern Discomfort for a while only to find out that it's ultimately taken because someone was in the approval process before you.

Too obscure, I think.

Charlotte Trampling, after the British actress? Likely also too obscure!

Charlotte Fever? (Apologies to Harlot Fevah, of the Boston Derby Dames.)

How about Mary F. Kill then? I think everyone over the age of 20 would get it, those below, would miss it appropriately.

There's a "Mary Kill" on the South Jersey Derby Girls, which might knock out Mary F. Kill (which is a great name).

oh shit corvine! i'm not on the all stars (more like a uh, regular star?) but I AM SO EXCITED FOR THE GAMES THIS WEEKEND! I'm waking up at 6am and everything to watch it on DNN...yeah!

glad you're with me on the one-pun thing, corvine!

One other rule that I think is good to go by when picking derby names....in general I have found that "-her" as a suffix for names is pretty overused and kind of meh. For example "Frida Beater", good, "Frida BeatHer" -- too much. Don't know why, it's a subtle thing, but it makes all the difference.

Have a rad game sunday, corvine!

capnsue, you and I are totally in the same boat with regard to thoughts on derby names.

(We had a referee named Ref by Lethal Injection, and apparently actually had some people attendees complain about his name. He went to a different league for a while and became Walter Ego, which he uses when he refs for us.)

Response by poster: Capnsue - I completely agree re. the no-double-pun and overuse of 'her.

Lauren Order
The Long Goodbye
Mary Dewer Kill?
Mary F. Kill
Bourbon Chaser
Must-hang Sally
Sis Boom Body
Sis Boom Bootie
Maltease Falcon
Smack Sabbath
Licker Cabinet
Dread Zeppelin
Crash L. Hammett
Femme Noir

Right now - friends are leaning heavily toward Mary Dewer-Kill and Sis Boom Body. And diaper girl... which I don't find funny at all.
