Argentina & Uruguay Honeymoon Suggestions?

Recommendations for great things to do on honeymoon in Buenos Aires, Argentina & Montevideo, Uruguay?

Friends are planning a honeymoon trip there in mid-April and are open to suggestions for great things to do. I'd like to give them some ideas (along with some related funds or gifts). I think they've already got places to stay lined up.

Things they like:
- good eating, good drinking. They appreciate authenticity & nice atmospheres.
- live music
- slightly eccentric or out-there performances (theater, dance, weird performance-art pieces, whatever)
- high-tech stuff (don't know that a lot of touristy things fit into this category, but I thought I'd mention it)

They're pretty adventurous, so off-the-beaten-path suggestions are also welcomed.

Have you visited/lived in the area? What made your trip especially special? I've seen some related previous questions but wanted more ideas. Thanks!

Best answer: One memorable experience for me was a meal at a restaurante a puerta cerrada, a private in-home dining room. I went to Casa SaltShaker; it was 12 people (mostly American expats at this particular sitting) in the chef's dining room, with an excellent five-course meal, with wine pairings.

The guy who runs it, Dan Perlman, has a blog that includes a lot of restaurant reviews, which may be helpful. It tipped me to Don Julio, which was the single best parilla (grilled steak) meal I had there (which is saying a lot).

The Teatro Solis in Montevideo is worth a guided tour (it was really charming), and in addition to the grand opera house, it has a black-box theatre (Sala Zavala Muniz) that is suitable for off-beat stuff. Actually, looking at the list of coming attractions, Grupo Mu_Danza has a show there, "Bonitas", running the 15-23. I saw one of their previous shows when I was in Montevideo, and I'm not the best judge of modern dance, but I enjoyed it.

Best answer: If I may toot my own horn, I live in Buenos Aires and run a daily tour round some of the more interesting parts of the city. I explain how the public transport system works and we travel by foot, public bus and subway. The site with more details is in my profile.

I agree with a puerta cerrada. Saltshaker is the grandaddy but there are many more that have popped up recently. Another new for the city is a Raw bar, which Perlman reviews here.

There are several day trips possible, Tigre, Lujan (visit nearby Carlos Keen for a fantastic lunch) or La Plata.

Guided tours of Teatro Colón and the Palacio Barolo are memorable too, but for a more off-beat cultural experience they could try the Orquesta Tipica de Fernando Fierro, which is hard to categorise but is bascially a punk tango group. Well worth a visit.
