Looking for a movie title

There was a movie from about the 80s, I think, about researchers who had invented a helmet of some kind that allowed its wearer to record their experiences and then the helmet could be used by someone else to experience what had been recorded. The lead-up was putting the helmet on a person who was dying. Can anybody tell me what that movie was called? Thanks!

Damnit, came here to say Brainstorm. That movie and Westworld gave me nightmares for years as a child, and it wasn't until recently that I found out that they were actual movies I saw on TV and not something from my own imagination.

Strange Days doesn't so much focus on the research itself as on the ways "the street finds its own uses."
