Art Class Modeling - NYC Specific

How to be an Art-class model: NYC specific (or other part-time student jobs in NYC)

My daughter is an NYU student (Tisch theater program) who would like to find a part-time job this semester. She has a full load of classes everyday from 7am to 6pm, but thinks she might be able to manage 1 or 2 evenings or a weekend day. I mentioned to her that I had seen this question about what it's like to be an art class model and she thinks that would be a great job for her. I agree, but I want to make sure she is looking for legitimate art school work, not end up in some sleazy situation.

I am afraid to Google for this; just imagining the types of results I might get from "nude model nyc" is making my head spin. So I thought I would ask if anyone knows a specific school to contact. Bonus points if you know that they have evening/weekend classes.

And if you have other suggestions for part-time student work in NYC (Lower East Side preferred) I'll take that too. I'm monitoring the recent post about online jobs (and she already does some of these) so we've got that covered.

Googling for "life model" will probably get you more of the results you're looking for.

If your daughter is comfortable with life modeling, she might also think about working as a standardized patient. The New York program I'm most familiar with is at Mount Sinai but presumably all of the teaching hospitals will have such a program.

Best answer: She should ask in NYU's studio art department(s).

If she wants to branch out, or if she's nervous about being naked in front of someone she knows from the dorms or something, she could also take field trips to SVA, Hunter (and maybe some other CUNY schools? I'm a Hunter alum and happen to know they hire models for drawing classes), Pratt, Columbia, and really any school in the NYC area that offers studio art courses. It might be worthwhile asking at the Art Students' League.

This isn't entirely in the scope of your question, but if she's old enough to be naked in front of a room full of strangers, she's old enough to find a part time job on her own.

Also, she really shouldn't be too picky about what neighborhood her part time job is in. Especially if she feels she's above being a barista, working retail, waiting tables, and the like.

Best answer: IIRC, most reputable universities and boutique art schools don't just let people pose nude for their art classes. Your daughter may be subjected to background testing as well as other preliminary screening methods to ensure that she is right for the job. Being a model is more than just being naked for a bunch of art kids learning how to work with figure and form; you need to have endurance, stamina, and the ability to maintain a position for up to two hours without shaking or changing elevation/angle/pose, etc.

The following links may aid your daughter in her search:

She can also specify if she is willing to do clothed and nude poses, as those are both useful to the art student in training.

Response by poster: Thanks, everyone. This is just what she needed to get started looking.
