Freaking out over last minute vacations.

Last Minute XMas Vacation. No idea how to find good last minute deals. Help me get a good last minute vacation!

I recently learned that my agency would allow us to have off 10 days over xmas and New Years after thinking I wouldn't have any time to travel then. Great! Well--not so much...

My girlfriend and I now really want to travel, but we're finding that the abundance of great last minute deals we expected from the down economy, people hating flying, etc. are not there. Maybe I'm missing something or looking wrong (had been mostly looking at packages) but we're lost. To further complicate things I don't have much time/energy to spend figuring this out and she hates few things in life as much as planning travel.

Key Info:

Budget
- Up to $5k for both of us, preferably for a full 10 days (although 8 would be fine for that amount). We do not want some super lux trip that lasts a whole 3 days for that amount--we want to enjoy the time there.

Location Preference
- We're flexible. We done Jamaica, were looking at Belize and other warmer countries. I would prefer a beach, but I don't want to spend my entire time there and it is not required which is why Belize for example is great because there's all these fantastic jungle things to do. Europe would be ok, but only warm places. I want to be wearing shorts and short sleeves even in the evening. Nowhere in the US please--preferably south of the US or Asia.

Misc Requirements - The one catch with my work is that I need to be able to get on a computer at the hotel to check my webmail and I don't want to bring a laptop. Also, safety is important which is why I ruled out Mexico for now--too much drug violence.

If you don't have any specific vacations in mind that I could look up--I'd love some tips on finding the sorts of things I'm looking for. I also don't know if package deals are the way to go--someone suggested I should be considering renting a timeshare but I have no idea how that works.

I would look at sky auctions They are perfect for finding a deal when you are not sure where to go. You do have to read the fine print carefully though. Good luck and have a great time.
