What should I demo?

What would make a good topic for a fun 5-7 minute how-to demo?

I'm going to be doing a how-to speech that explains how to do a task of some sort at my Toastmasters Club. I'd like it to be fun but what should I do it on? The task should involve a prop(s) that is easily portable, but other than that no other limits.

Using an iPad in an educational setting that bleeds over to every day life. You should have no problem filling the time and I think you can use something like GoToMeeting via the iPad to connect to a PC and show what you are doing via a projector. It would be timely and probably keep you audience glued to their seats.

Had to do a three-to-five minute speech/demo to "audition" as a Kaplan instructor and I chose uncorking champagne because it's sufficiently demonstrative, but totally speechy.

Plus you can add nifty factoids, like the inspiration for the shallow champagne glass coupe (the shape of Cleopatra's breast) and Dom Perignon's first (allegedly) words upon first tasting the champagne he (allegedly) invented ("Come quickly, I am drinking the stars!").

Plus Plus, hey uncorked bottle of champagne at the end!

Assemble a unique snack and then share it. You will be a hit.

I had to do a "how to" speech in college, and I brought my stir-crazy popcorn popper and started talking about each ingredient as I put them in and got it going, and then chatted a bit about microwave popcorn and movie theatre popcorn (with examples of both that I handed around) as the popcorn popped, and then at the end, we all had snacks :) Showing how to make a kitty litter cake would be easy, and it'd make enough for a group.

In Speech class, this was called a Demonstration Speech. When it was my turn, I walked up to the lectern with a protest sign that said, "Down With Speech Class!" Then I turned around, looked up at the sign -- "Oops! Wrong demonstration" -- put away the sign and proceeded with my actual how-to speech. (I led the class through the "How to write a science fiction story" flowchart.)

Whatvever topic you choose, you might find great inspiration by checking some of the old short subjects by Robert Benchley, such as How To Eat.
