Which British actor does Michael Marrus look like?

Michael Marrus is a distinguished Canadian historian of the Holocaust. He also really reminds me of a British character actor, especially in this small picture. Who is that actor?
Another picture here (er, he's on the right--the one who's not Pope Pius XII), and in a streamed lecture here (RealPlayer; from about 6 minutes in). I know it's someone I've seen many times on TV--I can almost hear lines of dialogue, spoken in a fruity English voice rather than Marrus's solid Toronto. But who is it? Links to your best guess much appreciated.

He looks kind of like a cross between Bob Hoskins and Ian McKellen.

I reckon he looks like The Chief from Get Smart.... Edward Platt. Not English... but that photograph sure looks like him.

Response by poster: Hmm, thanks for your efforts, but it's none of these so far. I should say that the person I'm thinking of is (as far as I know--I don't watch much TV these days) still active, and would be about the same age, give or take ten years, as Marrus.

Looks like (the late) Ken Campbell to me. Not sure about the fruitiness of his accent, was a fairly broad Londony one if that helps.

Reminds me of Philip Bosco, who is an American theatrical and television actor. I don't recall ever hearing an English accent from him, but the plummy tones I have heard, recently on Damages, warning Rose Byrne's innocent but canny Ellen Parsons about Glenn Close's viperish Patty Hewes.

It's not Gary Waldhorn who was on The Vicar of Dibley, is it?

He bears a resemblance to Roland Oliver, who's done a fair selection of TV.

Marrus on YouTube. I think something about the way he moves his mouth is reminding you of Ian McKellen.

Response by poster: Still none of these, I'm afraid, but thanks for your suggestions. I'm sure that at some point I'll be at my mum's house and the TV will be on in the background and suddenly I'll see THE PERSON I'm thinking of on the screen. Hopefully that will be before this thread gets closed.
