Problems getting my little Assus online:

I need some advice about getting my little Assus online:

I am running Linux. I have an Assus Eee PC netbook.
900A. It is adorable, I love it, but it can't go onto a WPA2 encryption system. My friends router is a Netgear wireless-g router wgr614vi0
She is on Clear (formerly Clearwire ) I CAN get on with my used 2G iPhone. Took some doing but as far as my netbook goes, we did get an Ethernet cord, plugged it into the router and I could not get on. We tested the Ethernet cord on her lap-top. She got a dialogue box that said she needed to. configure for a third party account.
We are both over 50. So please it is going to help us if directions are pretty simple. Thank you!

This may help you: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202834&highlight=wpa+gutsy

Pretty much follow it step by step, following the appropriate directions to your circumstances, hope it's not impossible to decipher.

Although, I don't know why it wouldn't connect with an ethernet cord. Someone with a better knowledge of linux and is better at walking someone else through this will help, hopefully.

Can you get online anywhere with your netbook anywhere else?

Which linux, the Xandros that comes with the Asus, or another one? (I use a plain vanilla install of Kubuntu).

if you're using linux that comes with the Asus, I'd try installing wicd. If you're using (k)ubuntu, definitely install wicd; the standard (k)ubuntu network manager is well known to be crap.

Installing wicd: if you can, apt-get it, do that:
sudo apt-get install wicd
then get rid off networkmanager:
sudo apt-get remove networkmanager

If you can't apt-get it, download the wicd tar. You'll need python too -- I don't think the Xandros has this. Once you have both, the install from source is pretty simple, just follow the instructions in install.txt.

I'll really encourage you to install a standard ubuntu if you haven't already -- it's much much easier to work with that than the Xandros. Installing eeebuntu is probably easiest; you'll need a 4GB usb drive.

You may want to install a netbook remix version; this gives you a simplified program lauch UI.

I just installed a standard kubuntu (kde 4.x Lucid Lynx) onto a 8GB sdhc card; network remix (and gnome) annoy me.

(I also have kde 3.x hardy heron on the preinstalled 4gb drive. That one is slightly more responsive, but I pretty much always use the slightly slower lucid install, as it's more up-to-date and the compositing UI is pretty if slower.)

You can get plenty of help for all this at http://forum.eeeuser.com/.

Response by poster: O can get on any place with WEP encrption, all this advice sounds good so far. I am really not enough of a nerd to run Linux in the first place. I do wonder though why the measure of plugging in an Ethernet cable did not work. Could anyone tell me why?

If you try disabling the wireless totally, it may work with an ethernet cable.
