I know it's not a very "intellectual" question, but I can't figure out where else to look for the answer. I have a song stuck in my head, or more precisely 1 line of the song...and it's driving me batty!

The line goes: "....and then i go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like i love you"
Clues: 1. that line always comes at the end of either a verse or a chorus
2. I have no idea when it came out...but i think its by a British artist.
3. It was a male who sang it (i think) although maybe a woman has made a cover of it.

It's stuck in my head and driving me crazy so please help!

"something stupid" is the name of the song. peggy lee has recorded it, among others, and as peggy isn't male, hers isn't the recording you're thinking of.

Or you could be thinking of the Frank/Nancy Sinatra duet.

Or the Sideshow Bob version with . . . Selma? Can't quite recall.

incidentally, google is great for identifying lyrics. just type in the words you remember. if you know a phrase, put it in quotes.

It was covered by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman. For some reason Andrew didn't mention the Nicole Kidman, so the may be the woman you were thinking of.

andrew was just relying on a google entry. which goes to show that asking here is better. :o)

Response by poster: Oh awesome! It was the Robbie Williams/Nicole Kidman cover. I'm now going to look for the original by Frank Sinatra!
Many many thanks Askme...! (and thanks for the google tip, Andrew Cooke)

Also sung by Mark (David Mitchell) in Season One of Peep Show... his answer-phone version is how I hear it in my head.

This question reminds me of a handy service I discovered when I was living in the UK. You know how it sucks when a song is playing and you really like it but you just don't know the title? Well, you can dial 2-5-8-0 on your mobile and hold it up to the speaker. For 50p, it will send you an SMS containing the song title, album and artist.

I think the service is called Shazam. I used it to figure out what song was playing at the beginning of American Splendor. Does anyone know of something similar in the US?

Virgin Moble Song ID. And damn, as a Virgin Mobile user, I wish I would have remembered this the other day in the car! I heard a song I'm dying to identify, but I genuinely can't think of a way to describe it on AskMe to find out...

shazam. previously discussed on metafilter.
(does it count as a self link if you're linking to something you linked to on Metafilter)
