What are some of the sweeter varieties of oranges out there in the common US market?
Mineola oranges/tangelos. mmmm.
One time I got these little ones called pixie tangerines, and they were amazingly sweet. Smaller even than clementines.

Blood Oranges cultivated in the United States are in season from December to March (Texas), and from November to May (California).

If you can find satsumas from Louisiana during the late fall then buy a whole bag. They typically start appearing in grocery stores down here around Thanksgiving.

Yummy as blood oranges are, I'm not sure I'd categorize them as sweet. Cara Cara's are the best oranges around, hands down!

seconding cecic- blood oranges have an almost savoury aspect, which is why (IMHO) they don't have as tasty juice as plain old valencias.
cara cara oranges are SWEET, and with very little in the way of acid, pretty insipid, but if that floarts your boat....
