I'd like to trace a route on a map & get its mileage

Is there an app / website / service (?) that allows me to trace a route on a map and then works out the distance for me?

I'm not looking for a "directions" type thing where I put in origin and destination. I would like a map in front of me, then trace, dot by dot, the route I have taken, and get the total mileage of that route. I imagine this is perfectly doable with Google Maps and hence, should exist.

(I use Runkeeper for a lot my walking & cycling, but sometimes I forget to turn it on, or can't get a GPS signal, or have little battery left, and would like to work out my mileage afterwards).

Thanks!

Best answer: You can do this with Google maps, yes. Just ask it to plot the directions, and then drag the suggested route line on the map around.

Each time you drag, you add a dot. Sooner or later, you have the route you want, and the "Distance" and "Time" update to reflect your changes.

Best answer: There's a couple more robust solutions but

Gmap Pedometer always worked pretty well for me.

Also MapMyRun has more bells and whistles.

Best answer: If you're in the UK, BikeHike is good, as it allows Ordnance Survey and Google maps in one go.

Best answer: One more! Mapitpronto also does this and you can toggle little mile markers on and off while you draw the map out.
